Abstract:

Alongside the canonical version, ancient texts report, almost always in fragments, many other tales on the foundation of Rome and on the actors who took part in its origin. This contribution examines these variants, tries to highlight their characteristic elements and questions the reasons that determined their lesser appeal and what these reasons can tell us about the way in which the Romans perceived and represented themselves.
