Abstract:

This essay focuses on the invocation of twelve Roman agricultural deities handed down to us by Fabius Pictor. The analysis shows that the construction of the sequence responds both to criteria of phonic harmony and to the temporal order of the operations that are concretely carried out in the fields. As such, the list displays traits of the "functional composition" typical of oral culture.
